Caligus elongatus as parasites of farmed salmonids in Ireland Naturalis
Jackson, David; Deady, Sandra; Hassett, Daniel; Leahy, Yvonne.
Infestation patterns of Caligus elongatus on farmed Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout were investigated at several sites along the west coast of Ireland. Parasite abundances were examined in relation to host species, farm location and season. Differences were found in the relative prevalence of infestation between salmon and rainbow trout. Caligus elongatus generally contributed more as a proportion of the total lice burden on rainbow trout than on Atlantic salmon. Evidence of possible parasite transmission from wild fish stocks was found at a number of sites where marked seasonal changes in parasite abundance were observed. A wide size distribution of adult female Caligus elongatus was found at a number of sites.

Fertility in South Dublin a Century Ago: A First Look AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Moehling, Carolyn M.; Grada, Cormac O.
Ireland's relatively late and feeble fertility transition remains poorly-understood. The leading explanations stress the role of Catholicism and a conservative social ethos. This paper reports the first results from a project that uses new samples from the 1911 census of Ireland to study fertility in Dublin and Belfast. Our larger project aims to use the extensive literature on the fertility transition elsewhere in Europe to refine and test leading hypotheses in their Irish context. The present paper uses a sample from the Dublin suburb of Pembroke to take a first look at the questions, data, and methods. This sample is much larger than those used in previous studies of Irish fertility, and is the first from an urban area. We find considerable support for...

Impact Of Greenhouse Gas Abatement Targets On Agricultural Activity AgEcon
Donnellan, Trevor; Gillespie, Patrick; Hanrahan, Kevin F..
As part of its continuing commitment to address the causes of climate change, the EU has agreed reduction targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to be achieved by 2020. In the case of Ireland the target is a reduction of 20 percent relative to the 2005 level. Agriculture is a major source of GHG emissions in Ireland, comprising 26.8 percent of total GHG emissions in 2007. Understanding the scale and cost of the decrease in agricultural production required to achieve this reduction in GHG emissions is particularly important, as is the comparison of the cost of this approach with a range of possible other means of achieving emissions reductions in the sector. This study finds that, even with reduced fertiliser usage and more extensive production...

Long-term changes in density, population structure and growth rate of Tellina tenuis from Dublin Bay, Ireland ArchiMer
Wilson, Jg.
Changes in the Tellina tenuis population in Dublin Bay, Ireland since 1977 are described. Population density at the monitoring site increased from 260 m(-2) (although a maximum density of 548 m(-2) was found nearby) in 1977 to a peak of 434 m(-2) in 1989. Densities recently have been the lowest recorded, around 170 m(-2). These changes do not seem to have been associated with any change in elevation of the site. The population structure has changed considerably, from one dominated by larger, older animals in 1977, when there did not seem to have been any significant recruitment for the previous two years, to one in which recruitment, if not in any great numbers, has at least been more or less regular, with the last two years (1993 and 1994) showing the...

Scales characterising a high density thin layer of Dinophysis acuta Ehrenberg and its transport within a coastal jet ArchiMer
Farrell, Hazel; Gentien, Patrick; Fernand, Liam; Lunven, Michel; Reguera, Beatriz; Gonzalez-gil, Sonsoles; Raine, Robin.
An investigation into the distribution of Dinophysis spp. in coastal waters off the south coast of Ireland was carried out in July 2007. Dinophysis acuta was present as a sub surface layer containing up to 55,000 cells L-1. The population had a high percentage of viable cells (mean: 89%; median: 94%; n = 24) with a high specific division rate (~0.55 d-1). The layer, of approximately 5 m thickness, did not coincide with the fluorescence maximum and was present as a patch of horizontal dimension less than 10 km x 7 km. Both conventional and towed undulating CTD used in conjunction with high vertical resolution sampling methods showed the patch of Dinophysis to move with a similar speed and direction as the coastal flow, which ran parallel to the coast in the...

Social Vulnerability and Ecological Fragility: Building Bridges between Social and Natural Sciences Using the Irish Potato Famine as a Case Study Ecology and Society
Fraser, Evan D. G.; Leeds Institute for Environmental Science and Management; evan@env.leeds.ac.uk.
Between 1845 and 1850, a potato blight triggered a famine that killed or displaced 25% of the Irish population. Aside from its historical and cultural significance, the Irish Potato Famine illustrates how social and economic forces can create vulnerability to environmental disturbance. Therefore, studying the famine contributes to the on-going academic debate on theories to combine social and environmental data. This paper explores the conditions leading to the Irish famine using the “Entitlement” framework of Sen (1980) and the “Panarchy” model proposed by Gunderson and Holling (2002). Entitlement theory allows us to better understand how community food security may become vulnerable over time as different social...

Structure du peuplement ichtyologique du talus continental à l'ouest des iles britanniques et impact de la pêche ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal.
A fisrt survey designed to estimate the impact of the fishery on the multispecific population of the slope has been carried out from June 26th to July 20th 1996 on board of the French R/V Thalassa. This survey took place West of Scotland, between 55 degrees and 57 degrees of latitude North, on an area from where data before exploitation were available and where fishing activity was intensive since the 90's. On this area, the analysis of the species composition by haul only showed that the fish assemblage was structured according to depth. Such a conclusion was not new. However, the positioning of the hauls on two smaller sectors characterized by different slopes and bottoms, and probably by a lesser fishing intensity on the one with rougher bottom did not...

The Fertility of the Irish in America in 1910 AgEcon
Guinnane, Timothy W.; Moehling, Carolyn M.; Grada, Cormac O.
In most western societies, marital fertility began to decline in the nineteenth century. But in Ireland, fertility in marriage remained stubbornly high into the twentieth century. Explanations of Ireland’s late entry to the fertility transition focus on the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Irish society. These arguments are often backed up by claims that the Irish outside of Ireland behaved the same way. This paper investigates these claims by examining the marital fertility of Irish Americans in 1910 and produces three main findings. First, the Irish in America had smaller families than both the rural and urban Irish and their fertility patterns show clear evidence of fertility control. Second, despite the evidence of control, Irish-Americans...

The Impact of Experience and Consumer Perceptions on Perceived Risk Reduction Behavior - The Case of Beef AgEcon
McCarthy, Mary.
This research examines perceived risk at the facet level (Psychological, Social, Performance, Safety, Health and Financial) and assesses the influence of consumer experience and perception of self (perceived ability, interest in product and interest in cooking), product (perceived product consistency), and environment (perceived confidence in the independent butcher) on these facets. It can be concluded that the influence of experience and perceptions varies by facet. However, perceived ability, confidence in the independent butcher and interest in beef were significant determinants of perceived risk for most risk facets while cooking interest, perceived consistency and experience were more risk facet specific. In the second section of this paper the use...

The role of Azadinium spinosum (Dinophyceae) in the production of azaspiracid shellfish poisoning in mussels ArchiMer
Salas, Rafael; Tillmann, Urban; John, Uwe; Kilcoyne, Jane; Burson, Amanda; Cantwell, Caoimhe; Hess, Philipp; Jauffrais, Thierry; Silke, Joe.
Azaspiracids (AZAs) are a group of lipophilic polyether compounds first detected in Ireland which have been implicated in shellfish poisoning incidents around Europe. These toxins regularly effect shellfish mariculture operations including protracted closures of shellfish harvesting areas for human consumption. The armoured dinoflagellate Azadinium spinosum Elbrachter et Tillmann gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae) has been described as the de novo azaspiracid toxin producer; nonetheless the link between this organism and AZA toxin accumulation in shellfish has not yet been established. In August 2009, shellfish samples of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) from the Southwest of Ireland were analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and...

Two “pillars” of cold-water coral reefs along Atlantic European margins: Prevalent association of Madrepora oculata with Lophelia pertusa, from reef to colony scale ArchiMer
Arnaud-haond, Sophie; Van Den Beld, Inge; Becheler, Ronan; Orejas, C.; Menot, Lenaick; Frank, N.; Grehan, A.; Bourillet, Jean-francois.
The scleractinian coral Lophelia pertusa has been the focus of deep-sea research since the recognition of the vast extent of coral reefs in North Atlantic waters two decades ago, long after their existence was mentioned by fishermen. These reefs where shown to provide habitat, concentrate biomass and act as feeding or nursery grounds for many species, including those targeted by commercial fisheries. Thus, the attention given to this cold-water coral (CWC) species from researchers and the wider public has increased. Consequently, new research programs triggered research to determine the full extent of the corals geographic distribution and ecological dynamics of “Lophelia reefs”. The present study is based on a systematic standardised sampling design to...
